I think the latest update to the application fixed the problem with not being able to make calls when you have a subscription but no credit. So it can definitely be done, keep digging. i dunno, i have a skype subscription, no credit… and a new 3g iphone, and I just spent an hour via skype talking to my mum without any problems.
